The United States (U.S.) Open Tournament is the second of the four major championships played each year by qualifying members of the Professional Golfers’ Association (PGA). The U.S. Open is held every June and is scheduled so that the final round is played on Father’s Day. The U.S. Open is held at a different location every year, and will be held at Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, PA in 2016. This will be the eighth time Oakmont has hosted the U.S. Open, which is more than any other course in the country. The first U.S. Open was played in 1895 in Rhode Island, although that iteration was a 36-hole competition played in one day. Although English golfers dominated the early years of the U.S. Open, its winners since 1911 have largely been Americans.
Players who have won three or more U.S. Opens include Willie Anderson (4: 1901, 1903, 1904, and 1905), Bobby Jones (4: 1923, 1926, 1929, and 1930), Ben Hogan (4: 1948, 1950, 1951, and 1953), Jack Nicklaus (4: 1962, 1967, 1972, and 1980), Hale Irwin (3: 1974, 1979, and 1990), and Tiger Woods (3: 2000, 2002, and 2008). The reigning U.S. Open champion is Jordan Spieth.
